What is a Mini Split Air Conditioning System?
A ductless mini split is a variation of the basic central air setup, but instead of a single condenser feeding a single air handler, a ductless mini split might have multiple air handlers. Central air uses ductwork, and all rooms get the same air treatment; with a mini split, each room is served individually by its own air handler. No ductwork is used.
How Does A Mini Split Air Conditioning System Work?
The process that a mini-split heat pump goes through to heat and cool your home is pretty simple. The unit uses refrigerant to transfer heat energy between inside and outside. In the summer, the heat in your home is absorbed by the refrigerant and then transferred out of your home. In the winter, the heat pump works in the opposite way, using the refrigerant to absorb the heat it can find outside and then transferring it into your home.
CAN A MINI-SPLIT SYSTEM HEAT & COOL A WHOLE HOUSE?
The short answer is yes. As seen in the illustration below, multiple indoor units can connect to a single outdoor unit (or multiple outdoor units) to provide air conditioning to your entire home. These units are very powerful and can heat and cool an entire home or multiple ‘zones’. When heating and cooling a home with a ductless mini-split air conditioner, installation is very important. Because you are installing multiple units, it takes a lot of planning and professional consultation to properly install the whole system, so it’s best to contact AOK Heating Air Conditioning & Electrical for a free consultation. We will visit your home and give you sound solutions for the best Air Conditioning System to meet your home’s needs.
Frequently Asked Questions
What brands do you install & service?
AOK Heating, Air Conditioning & Electric is qualified to repair almost any make & model of Ductless Heating & Cooling Systems. We primarily install Daikin Ductless Air Conditioning & Heating Systems. We have evaluated the top brands available in the market and have found Daikin, in our opinion, is the gold-standard in ductless heating and cooling.
Can I operate them remotely?
All of the Ductless AC Systems we install come with a remote that allows each user to control their own comfort level. Also, with Daikin’s Comfort Control App, you are always in control. You can use your tablet or smartphone to access your Daikin system via the internet. Fault conditions can also be detected remotely, allowing a quick response to problems. We also install the Daikin One+ smart thermostat which allows you to control multiple devices and regulate temperature, humidity, and even air quality.
Are Ductless AC & Heating Systems Efficient?
Daikin single and multi-zone systems offer SEER options up to 27.4 and state-of-the-art technology to help with efficiency. In addition to low operational sound levels, Daikin inverter technology also allows the system to deliver the capacity required to maintain the desired room temperatures. This function typically reduces energy consumption by up to 30% or more (compared to traditional fixed-speed ducted systems). Select Daikin systems offer the ‘intelligent eye sensor’. The intelligent eye is an infrared sensor with the ability to sense movement in the room. When you are in the room, the system operates normally. If you leave the room for more than 20 minutes, the system
automatically changes to an energy-saving operation. The intelligent eye can offer savings up to 20% in cooling and up to 30% in heating, compared to units without this feature.
I currently have window units and they are so noisy. Are ductless AC Systems quiet?
Not only do you benefit from getting Air Conditioning AND Heat from replacing your window units with Ductless Systems, but you get a higher caliber of technology. With Daikin inverter (variable-speed) technology, Daikin single and multizone systems feature low operational sound levels. Some Daikin units also feature ‘quiet mode function’, that allows the system to lower the sound level of the indoor unit even more. Daikin split systems are normally rated at 19 decibels (dB), which is equivalent to less than a whisper. For reference, the quietest window AC units operate at 44-63 decibels which is equivalent to a quiet office environment.
